State and Indigenous Quads Dining Halls

Project overview
The State Quad and Indigenous Quad Dining Hall projects involved the comprehensive renovation and modernization of two major residential dining facilities serving the University at Albany campus. These facilities function as the primary dining venues for two of the University’s largest undergraduate residential quads, together supporting several thousand students living within the surrounding residence halls. Both dining halls operate as high-volume, market-style food service environments with extended service hours and continuous occupancy throughout the academic year.
Sage Engineering Associates provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services for the complete renovation of both facilities. The projects included full modernization of building infrastructure systems to support contemporary campus dining operations and high-capacity food preparation environments.
Mechanical systems were redesigned to support the demanding ventilation and thermal loads associated with large institutional kitchens and densely occupied dining spaces. New commercial kitchen exhaust hood systems and makeup air systems were designed to maintain proper kitchen pressurization, ventilation performance, and code compliance. Air handling systems serving the dining areas were upgraded with variable air volume air distribution to accommodate widely varying occupancy levels throughout the day while improving overall energy efficiency.
The renovations also included replacement and upgrading of plumbing systems serving food preparation, sanitation, and dining operations. New plumbing infrastructure was designed to support expanded kitchen equipment, dishwashing systems, and food service operations while improving reliability and maintainability.
Electrical systems were modernized to support new commercial kitchen equipment, serving stations, lighting systems, and upgraded building power distribution. Fire protection systems were also extended and upgraded to provide full sprinkler protection throughout the renovated facilities in accordance with current codes and University standards.
Together, the State Quad and Indigenous Quad Dining Hall renovations created modern, high-capacity residential dining facilities designed to support the University’s student housing system while improving operational efficiency, ventilation performance, and overall reliability of the building systems.
