Clifton Park, NY
Northway Pain Management

Project overview
Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided full mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and fire protection engineering design services for the new Outpatient Pain Management facility. The design accommodates a range of clinical functions, including exam and procedure rooms, operating rooms, recovery areas, staff support spaces, and administrative functions, all within an outpatient medical office environment.
Building systems were designed to support clinical operations while integrating efficiently with the building infrastructure. HVAC systems were engineered to meet the ventilation, pressurization, temperature control, and patient comfort requirements associated with procedure and exam spaces, consistent with healthcare ventilation and air quality standards. Electrical systems support medical equipment loads, imaging systems, lighting, life safety systems, and emergency power distribution. The electrical design provided an NFPA 99 Category 1 essential electrical system, coordinated with life safety and critical branch requirements to support patient safety in the event of a utility failure.
Plumbing systems support domestic water, sanitary, and specialty clinical requirements, while fire protection systems comply with applicable life safety codes and occupancy classifications. Medical gas systems were designed to support procedure rooms and recovery spaces with medical air, vacuum, and oxygen systems, including source equipment, piping distribution, zone valve arrangements, and alarm systems, developed in accordance with healthcare standards governing medical gas and vacuum systems.
The project required detailed interdisciplinary coordination to integrate procedure room mechanical, electrical, and medical gas requirements within the constraints of the building envelope. System zoning, controls, and equipment layouts were carefully developed to maintain clinical functionality, patient comfort, and operational reliability while minimizing impacts to building infrastructure.
The completed design delivers a flexible and efficient outpatient clinical environment that supports both invasive and non-invasive pain management procedures. The approach emphasized constructability, long-term maintainability, and adaptability for future equipment and operational changes, providing the Owner with a reliable and code-compliant facility tailored to outpatient healthcare.
