Project overview

Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided HVAC, plumbing, fire protection, electrical, and structural engineering design services for major additions and renovations to the Kingston High School campus as part of the District’s Second Century Initiative. The project included construction of two large academic classroom wings, renovations to existing campus buildings, and construction of a new field house, all while maintaining campus operations.

The mechanical design emphasized energy efficiency, indoor environmental quality, and long-term operational flexibility. A central high-efficiency heating and cooling strategy was developed to support both new and renovated spaces, integrating advanced air and hydronic systems tailored to space function and occupancy. Active chilled beam systems were implemented in perimeter classrooms and office areas to provide quiet, draft-free heating, cooling, and ventilation with reduced fan energy and lower distribution airflows. Interior classrooms and office spaces were served by displacement ventilation systems, improving ventilation effectiveness and indoor air quality while reducing energy use. Ceiling-mounted radiant heating panels were incorporated in select interior spaces with roof exposure to offset envelope heat loss efficiently.

Dedicated outdoor air systems with energy recovery were designed to meet State Education Department ventilation requirements while minimizing heating and cooling loads. Specialized HVAC systems were developed for science laboratories, technology classrooms, and music spaces, including separate exhaust systems, low-noise design criteria, and space-specific environmental controls.

Electrical engineering services included a new site medium-voltage power distribution system coordinated with Central Hudson, providing reliable service and flexibility for phased construction. The project incorporated an emergency generator to support critical systems, along with new power distribution, lighting, and controls throughout the campus. High-efficiency LED lighting with automatic controls was coordinated closely with the architectural design to reduce energy consumption and maintenance requirements.

Low-voltage systems included a new voice-evacuation fire alarm system, structured cabling for telephone and data, district-coordinated audio-visual systems, public address systems, wireless clock systems, and integrated security and surveillance systems.

The Kingston Second Century project reflects Sage Engineering’s experience delivering complex K-12 campus projects that integrate advanced HVAC technologies, energy-efficient electrical infrastructure, and carefully coordinated building systems to support modern educational environments.
