Operating Room Upgrades

Project overview
Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided HVAC, electrical, plumbing and fire protection design services for the renovation of seven (7) existing operating rooms and the construction of one (1) new operating room within an active hospital surgical suite.
The existing operating rooms, originally constructed in the late 1960s, were comprehensively modernized to meet current healthcare codes, clinical standards and system performance requirements. The project included upgrades to mechanical, electrical and life safety systems to support modern surgical procedures and equipment loads while integrating with the existing hospital infrastructure.
Mechanical system upgrades included increased airflow capacity to meet current operating room air change requirements, improved filtration and air distribution systems, enhanced pressurization control, and upgraded temperature and humidity control systems.
Electrical design included new power distribution to support surgical equipment and lighting systems, upgrades to life safety and emergency power systems, and improvements to fire alarm and associated systems serving the operating suite.
A new operating room was designed and constructed to allow the facility to maintain surgical case volumes during construction. Detailed construction phasing was developed so that existing operating rooms could be renovated sequentially while maintaining continuous operation of the surgical department.
The project required extensive coordination within an occupied healthcare environment, with system tie-ins and infrastructure modifications carefully sequenced to minimize disruption to adjacent clinical areas.
Engineering the human environment.
