Hybrid OR Renovation

Project overview
Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided HVAC, electrical, plumbing, medical gas, and fire protection engineering design services for the renovation and conversion of an existing operating room into a state-of-the-art Hybrid Operating Room suite supporting advanced surgical and image-guided procedures. The project transformed OR #11 into a modern hybrid operating environment featuring advanced imaging equipment, shielded control spaces, equipment support rooms, and associated infrastructure upgrades.
The approximately 900-square-foot operating room was designed to accommodate complex interventional and surgical procedures requiring advanced imaging technology, specialized airflow systems, and increased utility capacity. New shielded control and equipment rooms were constructed to support imaging systems and related technology infrastructure. Extensive coordination with equipment vendors, architects, and structural teams was required to integrate ceiling-mounted booms, imaging equipment, surgical lighting, and equipment racks within the existing hospital structure.
Mechanical upgrades included modifications to air distribution systems, installation of laminar flow ceiling diffusers, ductwork reconfiguration, terminal unit adjustments, and HVAC control enhancements to maintain required operating room airflow, temperature, humidity, filtration, and pressurization standards. Electrical improvements included new critical branch power distribution, isolated power system modifications, panel upgrades, surge protection, emergency power coordination, equipment power connections, lighting enhancements, low-voltage system integration, nurse call updates, and fire alarm modifications.
Plumbing and medical gas work included reconfiguration of existing medical gas and vacuum systems, additional vacuum outlets, scrub sink coordination, and utility modifications required to support the renovated operating room. Fire protection and life safety system upgrades were incorporated throughout the project.
Completed within an active hospital environment, the project required extensive phased construction planning and coordination to maintain adjacent surgical operations. The finished Hybrid Operating Room provides a highly specialized environment supporting advanced surgical and imaging procedures while meeting modern healthcare standards.
