Project overview

Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, controls, and medical gas engineering design services for the renovation and modernization of Cardiovascular Operating Room OR-8 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, New York. The project transformed the existing operating room into a modern cardiovascular surgical environment capable of supporting advanced cardiac and vascular procedures with integrated surgical technology, perfusion systems, and imaging support infrastructure.

The renovation included significant upgrades to the operating room mechanical systems to meet current healthcare ventilation and environmental control requirements for operating rooms in accordance with ASHRAE 170. The HVAC design included dedicated operating room airflow control, room pressurization monitoring, humidity control, airflow tracking, and enhanced temperature control to maintain critical surgical conditions. The operating room was designed and controlled as a positive pressure environment with continuous monitoring of room differential pressure, airflow, temperature, and humidity.

Electrical system upgrades included modifications to the essential electrical system, isolated power distribution, surgical equipment power infrastructure, operating room lighting systems, integration rack power, wall-mounted display systems, boom systems, nurse call, fire alarm, and data infrastructure required to support advanced integrated operating room technologies. The project incorporated multiple equipment booms, anesthesia booms, perfusion booms, isolated power panels, and extensive coordination with surgical integration vendors and medical equipment manufacturers.

Medical gas system upgrades included coordination and integration of oxygen, medical air, vacuum, WAGD, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide services to support cardiovascular surgical procedures and perfusion equipment. The operating room infrastructure was designed to support advanced surgical integration systems, including Stryker integration systems, surgical displays, video routing, digital timing systems, and data connectivity throughout the operating suite.

The project required extensive coordination within an active hospital surgical department, including detailed phasing, shutdown planning, infection control coordination, and integration with existing hospital infrastructure to maintain continuity of surgical operations during construction.
