Cath Labs Renovation

Project overview

Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire protection, and medical gas engineering design services for the phased renovation and upgrade of three cardiac catheterization laboratories within the existing Bassett Medical Center imaging and cardiovascular services department. The project included renovations to Cath Labs A, B, and C, associated control rooms, UPS rooms, equipment rooms, and support spaces to accommodate new Philips imaging systems and upgraded clinical infrastructure.

The project involved extensive coordination of architectural, structural, and MEP systems within an active hospital environment to support new imaging equipment, ceiling-mounted rail systems, medical gas systems, electrical distribution upgrades, and HVAC modifications required for modern cardiac catheterization procedures. Engineering design included upgrades to HVAC air distribution and controls, emergency and normal power distribution, UPS systems, lighting, fire alarm modifications, fire protection coordination, plumbing modifications, and medical gas distribution systems serving the procedure spaces.

Electrical system upgrades included new UPS connections, panelboard modifications, emergency power coordination, procedure room lighting, imaging equipment power infrastructure, and fire alarm/security system coordination within the existing Siemens Fire Finder system.

Mechanical and medical gas design included HVAC renovations for procedure room environmental control, modifications to support space ventilation, plumbing upgrades, and new medical gas distribution systems for the renovated catheterization labs.

The project required detailed phasing and coordination to maintain ongoing hospital imaging and cardiovascular operations during construction while minimizing disruption to adjacent diagnostic imaging and patient care areas.
