BSL III Laboratory and Vivarium

Center for Medical Sciences, Inc.

Albany, New York

Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided engineering design services for Project included the renovation of 15,000 square feet of existing laboratory space to a Biosafety Level (BSL) III laboratory and vivarium space including complete segregation of the space from the rest of the building.

This project was recognized and featured in a cover article in the March, 2011 edition of PM Engineer Magazine.

Project features included:

  • 15,000 CFM, HEPA-filtered central exhaust system with constant volume air flow boxes to maintain constant space negativity toward areas of higher contamination.
  • Supply air provided via Tek-Air™ constant volume boxes connected to a new supply distribution duct.
  • New plumbing systems throughout including acid-resistant waste piping connected to an Acorn™ sanitary vacuum system and effluent decontamination system.
  • Laboratory gas distribution piping.
  • Fully automatic sprinkler system throughout.
  • New electrical power, lighting and fire alarm systems.

Building 81 Addition

Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc

Rensselaer, New York

Sage Engineering Associates, LLP provided mechanical, electrical, plumbing and structural engineering design services for a 16,000 square foot addition consisting of laboratory and office spaces.  An 18,000 cfm air handling unit and variable air volume (VAV) distribution system provided heating, ventilation and cooling to the laboratory and office spaces.  Constant volume fume hoods exhausted laboratories.  New HVAC equipment was connected to existing plant steam and chilled water systems.

Project features included:

  • Plant steam distribution piping, pressure reducing station, and steam-to-hot water heat exchangers for building heat.
  • VAV air handling unit with terminal hot water reheat air systems throughout.
  • New HVAC distributed digital control system for the addition.
  • New plumbing systems throughout including acid-resistant waste piping for laboratory spaces.
  • New fire service main and fully automatic sprinkler system throughout addition.
  • New electrical power, lighting and fire alarm systems.
  • Braced steel frame construction with reinforced concrete spread footing  foundation.

Renovations and Additions to Laboratory Building

Biosafety Level 3 (enhanced) Research Facility

Slingerlands, New York

Sage Engineering Associates, LLP designed a new laboratory at Griffin. This project included the renovation of an existing rabies laboratory building to a new, state-of-the-art research laboratory with Biosafety Level 2 and 3 (enhanced) spaces to research the mosquito-borne West Nile Encephalitis virus on a substantially accelerated design schedule.  The existing building size was 3,800 square feet.  With new additions, the building enclosed 6,000 square feet.  This project also interfaces with a master plan for the site’s power, emergency power, chilled water, domestic water, natural gas, and compressed air.

Systems featured in this design include:

  • Extended Underground 13.2 kV Primary Distribution System with Transformer, Secondary Feeders, & Generator
  • Chemical Fume Hood Exhausts
  • HVAC with Room Pressurization Controls
  • Biosafety Hood Exhausts
  • Chilled Water Air Conditioning
  • Heating Hot Water
  • Heat Recovery
  • DDC Controls
  • Life Safety and Integrated Security System
  • Addressable Fire Alarm with Smoke Control
  • Design Services for Laboratory Equipment including benches, workstations and hoods
